Jacks are great fighters that are never camera shy
Belize has a host of other game fish available on its flats and mangroves. The combination of the barrier reef, and inland mangrove island chains make it a complex ecosystem that sustains all forms of life on the food chain.
Snook can be found by casting streamers or poppers close to any mangrove that is surrounded by deep water. Like the barracuda, the snook relies on ambushing its prey to succeed. This fish will lie out of sight a few feet within the mangrove and attack baitfish as they swim by unknowingly. The guide will pole you close to the mangrove and you will make repeated shots into small depressions in the roots until a hookup is made. Strong hands are needed as these fish will pull hard to get back into the roots. This is challenging fishing, as accurate casts are needed; too close and your fly will snag a branch, too far and it is out of range for the stealthy snook. A tip—we like to cut the tapers off our lines for this fishing to allow for precise, quick turnover of stout leaders and big flies. Bring a junk fly line and try it…you will be amazed.
Snook always fall for Deciever patterns like this one
Jacks and barracuda will pop up at all times on our flats during your trip. These are hungry predators that rarely refuse an offering. Jacks tend to school up, and their curiosity schools them even more once one is hooked, so tell your partner to be ready with the rod if you hook one, as there will be more nearby. Fly fishing in Belize for our "less glamorous" species is becoming very popular among our guests. Once you try it, you will see why.
