Dangling south from the Yucatan Penninsula, Ambergris Caye glistens like a jewel in the sun. The 25 mile long island is protected by the worlds second largest barrier reef, located a few hundred yards off shore. Divided from Mexico by a narrow, man made channel called Bacarlar Chico, this ancient waterway was carved by the early Maya, who wanted to shorten the passage from Chetumal Bay to the Carribbean. Located about 35 miles north of Belize City, the island can be reached in 20 minutes by plane.
Another day in paradise
Water activities come in all shapes and adventure levels. From diving in deep coral canyons to fly fishing extensive flats for elusive species – Ambergris Caye has something for everyone. Belize’s Barrier reef is the longest in the Western Hemisphere and may have the largest diversity of marine life anywhere on the planet. Submerged just below the surface, rugged mountains and canyons of coral drop thousands of feet to the sea floor. The enchanting town of San Pedro is located in the heart of Ambergris Caye. Only seven blocks long and three blocks wide, this town boasts enormous character and has a vibe similar to towns much larger than itself. It takes about an hour to stroll every cobblestone street, and longer if you stop at the many tiki bars along the way. Front Street is where all the action in San Pedro abounds and the street is lined with bars, shops, restaurants, and local businesses.
Belizean tapestry
Belize is one of the top eco-tourism destinations in the world. Belize attracts not only American, but European and Australian travelers as well. It’s undisputed dive reputation brings expert divers every year to explore undersea marine and coral life. Fish populations and vast sand flats attract fly and light spin anglers to its waters year round. Fly fishing in Belize is not out of reach for the adventure bound fisherman. In most cases, a direct flight will put you on the flats on the same day of your departure. In addition, just outside the reef, blue water species of fish draw medium-heavy tackle anglers to test their wits against ocean going pelagic species.
